Back in 2004 the SWLFSC ‘Way Ahead’ strategy committed to change aspects of life: our thinking, resources use, response to climate change, approach to health and equality, and to increase our sense of control – moving from feelings of powerlessness to ownership of a more sustainable future.
Moving forward, the UN 2030 agenda for sustainable development is built on the framework of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) together stimulating action in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.
Everyone needs to be involved; individuals, communities, private public and voluntary sectors and the media. The SWLFSC holds that only learning can lead to the change we need. Social change relying on a convergence of views is summarised by P Russell (1991):
‘A person whose goal is self- realisation… is helping change the world at a very fundamental level’ and we may be reaching a tipping point, where there are sufficient numbers of self- reflective consciousnesses on the planet for the next level (of development) to appear’.
